Maintaining the integrity and safety of bridge infrastructure is a continuous effort — and one of the most critical components in this process is the elastomeric expansion joint.
HiSCS undertook an extensive maintenance project to selectively replace twenty-eight elastomeric expansion joint mats of different sizes at several locations across the Athens International Airport access bridges.
These joints allow bridges to expand and contract with temperature changes, traffic loads, and structural movement, ensuring long-term durability and smooth driving conditions. Over time, wear and tear can compromise their performance, making timely replacement essential.
Our latest maintenance operation focused on replacing aged elastomeric joints, aiming to restore flexibility, sealing, and load transfer capabilities across the deck.
Benefits of replacement:
- Enhanced ride comfort
- Improved water tightness
- Reduced structural stress
- Extended bridge lifespan
Bridge maintenance isn’t just about repairs — it’s about preserving safety, performance, and reliability for years to come.
